Our Mission

We provide free, one-to-one tutoring for adults reading at or below 6th grade level. We work with both Basic Literacy students and new English learners.

According to the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy, 46% of adult New Mexicans read below the 6th grade level.

Just imagine if you couldn’t…

  • Complete a job application

  • Read medicine labels
  • Use a map
  • Understand road signs
  • Order from a printed menu
  • Read stories to your children

For people who can’t read or write, these simple tasks are impossible.

About 25% of Rio Arriba County residents lack basic literacy skills. About one in three have limited literacy skills, which means they struggle to read the newspaper or fill out job applications.

When people can’t read, they face an uncertain future

Adult literacy students often make big changes in their lives as their abilities improve:

  • advance in employment

  • leave public assistance
  • enroll in higher education
